Just thought while I can't do much with out my computer at least I could introduce you to two of the furrier members of our eextended family.

Don't worry I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, I've just barely had a minute to catch my breath since returning back to the office. January and February are always our busiest months and to top it off my little sister-in-law (to be) has been very very unwell in hospital so we've been doing a lot of looking after her.

This is pretty much I've been wearing the last week, in particular the cardigan. Our summer has been over run with rain storms and chillier days that aren't quite right for layers but are too cool for shorts sleeves.

Travel Bug: après-ski

With the Summer here being anything but summery I desire nothing more to snuggle on my couch with a good book and cup of tea. I really do wish I could of had a proper holiday though and this chillier weather actually has me wishing we were holed up in a little wooden cottage and snow falling throughout the night so we could spend our day's snowboarding. Maybe a little cottage like this one:

We could spend our mornings eating fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, dripping with gooey icing and our evenings lazing about the place with board games, books and maybe a roast dinner, and I'd wear this:

Oversized cardigan, a cute and comfortable tee, watch, glasses, Cheap Monday jeans, pink Minnetonka mocassins for lounging around the lodge and Sweater, Double breasted peacoat, Cheap Monday jeans, wrap watch, Minnetonka mocassins and leather satchel for the evening or days we might venture out to a sweet little village farmers market or restaurant.

From the Kitchen: Pear & Cracked Pepper Pie

We decided to invite some friend over for dinner on Wednesday and for your typical kiwi BBQ and I decided to embrace my American heritage and bake a pie for dessert. A good pie is not the easiest feat but I decided to bake one anyway. We had some pears that were starting to get a little too ripe so I decided they would be the best ingredient for said pie. When reading smitten kitchen I remember her saying white pepper gives pears a nice little kick so thought that a Pear and pepper pie would be delicious. I searched the internet and didn't find much and our pantry is pretty bare at the moment so I just winged it and came up with one of the yummiest pies I think we've had in quite sometime.

Pear and Cracked Pepper Pie

(adapted from this recipe on ifood)

- 4 or 5 Pears; peeled, cored and sliced.

- 3/4 a cup of sugar.

- 1/4 a cup of plain flour.

- 1 teaspoon of ground black pepper.

- Pre-made butter crust pastry. (or you can make your own)

1. Peal, core and slice your pears. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl combine your sugar, flour and pepper. Toss in your pear and coat them with the sugar mixture.

3. Line a 10 inch pie dish with the chilled pastry and prick a few wholes in the bottom.

4. Spread the pear mixture on the base and cover. You can use one clean sheet of pastry with a few air holes pricked in the top or create a pattern, I did a lattice pattern on mine.

5. Cover the pie with aluminium foil and bake at 220ºc (425F) for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for a further 15 minutes.

We had ours with vanilla bean ice cream but it would be delicious with some fresh whipped cream too.

How to wear: Denim Shorts

One of my favorite things to wear in Summer is denim cut offs. That is of course if it's a summer that not filled with cyclones.
I love styling my cutoff's in a very bohemian style with fun colorful jewellery and light and flowey tops. I'm actually on the hunt for some more for my trip to Aussie next month.

Hearted this Week

Dont worry we haven't fallen off the edge of the earth life has just been non-stop. We finally found a new house and purchased me a new car. I did take this week off work to get some work done around home and the blog but I got some really sad news and spent the most of the days lying on the couch staring at the TV vacantly. It's been a rough week, but I am excited for life in our new home.

This is also what else has kept me happy/sane/inspired:

1. This beautiful dessert sound delicious and looks perfect for our up and coming summer (maybe without the figs though).

2. I am in love with this dress.

3. I agree with this post with all my heart.

4. Yoga Breakdancing. Insane.

Most of the blogs that I read and interact with are based in the Northern Hemisphere and it's really interesting to read all about everyone’s excitement for Autumn and colder weather and warmer layers while I'm experiencing the beginning of Spring and excitement for sunshine and summer.

I took the whole of last week off work to find a new house, start to box up our stuff and watch my brother marrie his beautiful best friend, kick ass side kick and mother of amazing little girl.

From the Kitchen: Chocolate Avocado Cake

Avocado currently makes up about 90% of my diet and I guess my bank book is just lucky the punks family have a few trees that I am allowed to raid when ever I feel the urge. I had 8 avocados sitting in my fruit bowl the other day and not enough time to eat them all on toast so I decided to make a yummy little cake with a difference. I know it sounds a little crazy, but this is one delicious cake and to be totally honest if I didn't pile on the bright green icing people wouldn't of even know it had avocado in it, honestly this vegan chocolate cake is dense and moist, and everything you might want from a chocolate cake minus the eggs and butter. It was honest-to-goodness delicious! Not to mention vegan and full of healthy fats!

Vegan Chocolate Cake with Avocado

3 cups all-purpose flour

6 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 teaspoons baking soda

2 cups granulated sugar

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup soft avocado, well mashed, about 1 medium avocado

2 cups water

2 Tablespoons white vinegar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 180 degrees c. Grease and flour two 8 or 9-inch rounds. Set aside.

Sift together all of the dry ingredients except the sugar. Set that aside too.

Mix all the wet ingredients together in a bowl, including the super mashed avocado.

Add sugar into the wet mix and stir.

Mix the wet with the dry all at once, and beat with a whisk (by hand) until smooth.

Pour batter into a greased cake tins. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Let cakes cool in pan for 15 minutes, then turn out onto cooling racks to cool completely before frosting with avocado buttercream.

The avocado buttercream is a dash more strange. Yes, it’s bright green. Yes, the only fat in the buttercream is avocado meat. It’s sweet with slight nutty and citrus flavor.

Avocado Buttercream Frosting

8 ounces of avocado meat, about 2 small to medium, very ripe avocados

2 teaspoons lemon juice

1 pound powdered sugar, sifted

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Peel and pit the soft avocados. It’s important to use the ripest avocados you can get your hands on. If the avocados have brown spots in the meat, avoid those spots when you scoop the meat into the bowl.

Place the avocado meat into the bowl of a stand mixer fit with the whisk attachment. Add lemon juice and whisk the avocado on medium speed, until slightly lightened in color and smooth, about 2-3 minutes.

Add the powdered sugar a little at a time and beat. Add vanilla extract until combined. If not using right away, store in the refrigerator. Don’t worry. It won’t turn brown!

My three year old nephew even loved this cake and nick-named it the incredible hulk cake. What do you think, have I scared you off?

2. My thoughts are with: Kate & Will. if you haven’t heard, please take a minute to read about their situation on Kate’s blog. Kate & Will have set up their shop in attempts to raise money to help with Will’s hospital debt. As someone who has suffered from cancer in the past I can not fathom having finances being one of your biggest problems. My heart goes out to them and I also hope that the USA government will wake up soon and offer free/subsidises health care to its citizens like NZ soon.

3. Are you ever stumped on what to wear this season? Well here's some ideas for Northern hemisphere readers and Southern hemisphere readers.

4. One of my favorite NZ fashion lables Sunday opened their on-line shop today. I've already added this dress to my wishlist.

Auckland has become absolute Rugby chaos with the World cup on. My previously 10 minute commute to work is now taking up to 45 minutes and all because we live near the main stadium. It's kinda of exciting with all the functions and people dressed in their team colors everywhere but some days I just wish I could run away. One place I really wish I could jet off to is Venice with its beautiful architecture and canals.

This is what I would pack:

Bag, dress, heels, cardigan and scarf.

Hearted this Week

Well it's been one of those weeks. You know the ones where you feel like you would get more done if you banged your head against a wall for half the day and ignored anyone and everyone who speaks to you. Well to that I say thank you god, its Friday and this weekend I fully plan on locking myself away in my studio to work while the punk watches the quarter finals of the rugby world cup.

Heres to the weekend and getting to see these guys.

1. A vintage camera ordered from Japan containing a roll of previously undeveloped film from the 1940′s. What a magical discovery. I find this incredibly sad yet amazing and pleasently surprising at the same time.

2. This new-to-me blog is so full of beauty and love, from the perfectly captured images to the well versed words and the warm feelings that you are filled with as you read.

3. I'm really digging Abigail Ahern's home on The Selby.

4. I'm super happy that spring has arrived and we are having longer days filled with warm sunshine. I have started my hunt for the perfect summer sandal, these and these are currently top of my list.

5. I can't wait to go to this store when I go to Brisbane to see my dad. See Viv's post about it here.

House Hunting: Bath

I'll let you all in on a little secret.

I use to have an irrational fear of bath tubs. I have no idea why but when ever I was in a bath tub of hot water I would have severe claustrophobic panic attacks and hyperventilate. But then when I was in Canada I dislocated my shoulder while snow boarding and the only time I could find relief from the pain was while I was submerged in a hot bath or spa and now I'm hooked.

Is there anything more stylish than an old claw foot tub.

I love the mix of the white walls and accessories with the dark wood.

This space is amazing, and how beautiful are those hand basins.

I would love to DIY one of the Tub caddy's if we do get a house with a bath. (I would only DIY it because I know you can't import Oak like this into NZ)

There's nothing better than relaxing in a nice warm bath with some salts and oils and maybe even a few candles and old music.

1. My thoughts and prayers are with Andrew and Carissa at the moment. Hope they can bring Rinah home soon.

2. This beautiful ex-pat kiwi just got married. Congratulations Gala, doesn't she look amazing.

3. Now that spring is here and the weather is warmer I am looking forward to smoothies for breakfast. I like the sound of these ones and this chart will help too.

4. My ipod got stolen last weekend (from my house, annoying) so I've started looking at getting a new one; maybe with these headphones. Gotta have decent headphones.

5. It makes me happy that TED talks exist. Thumbs up for being able to tap into the most exciting creative and intellectual minds from around the world, all for free!

6. It's my birthday tomorrow, YAY!
I know I posted a little wish list yesterday but while I'm at it. I'd love all of these shoes, these clothes, these things and to travle to all of these places. Ha! Greedy much?
7. My friend Kennedy's artist floor talk on Wednesday. Inspired and such awesome furniture.

8. Excitedly awaiting this album and this one too.

Birthday Wishes

Well on Sunday I will officially be 27 and I already feel like an old lady. It was just a few years ago when I was staying up late and sleeping all day and swore I would never be one of those boring people who just wanted to sit around home and read and now there's nothing I like more than climbing into bed with the punk in the evenings (like 8.30pm in the evenings) and reading a few pages of my book. That's OK though, as long as my memory stops shorting out, I actually had to count back this week to remember how old I am.

We're having a few friends over to watch more rugby and have a few drinks on Saturday and then plan on heading to one of my favorite little places for lunch on Sunday. I hope we have nice weather again. I won't be able to see my dad or brothers on the day so will have to top up my phone card and call them. I do wish we all lived in the same country most days, even if it is a good excuse to travel.

and just because I can post anything I want here, this is my wish list:

Striped tee's, I'm really liking these dip-dyed ones from Madewell, shorts, flat sandals and tote bags for summer. I always seem to ad summer clothes to my birthday wish list, then end up buying winter items with my birthday money. Go figure.

I'm trying to boost my jewelerry collection too. I have a bit of jewellery but because it was all made be my mother and therfore very sentimental I don't wear it very often.

Kitchen ware; I love to cook and spend most of my relaxing time in the kitchen baking and if I'm not baking to relax I'm curled up with a good book.

And who says no to shoe's, not me! Especially if their a cute pair of wedges.

The second thing on my home hunting wish list is a yard, specifically one big enough for a small garden and a dog.

The punk and I love to be outside and I've always loved the idea of eating outdoors on the patio with friends.

A deck like this one would be perfect for breakfasts and lunches in the sunshine.

With an outdoor fireplace to keep us warm on the chilly summer evenings.

and a little vege patch like this one, but with a fence of course to keep the pup out.

What a weekend. We had the All Black vs. France rugby world cup game on Saturday night, and wow what atmosphere and tension. I always knew it was going to be a pretty intense game and France have knocked us out of the world cup a few times before but I didn't expect that much flare. The crowd was so loud and I nearly shed a little tear when Richie received his cap.
Sunday was a little more relaxed, we spent the day down at the punks parents farm chilling with all the family. I was kept pretty bust picking avocados and playing games with my neice and nephew. It was fantastic day really.

I didn't wear this outfit on the weekend but to work today instead. I got the new blouse on Friday, I am loving the pencil skirt and blouse combo for work now that it is warm enough to not have to wear a cardi or jacket.

Wow this week has absolutely flown by, I feel like I've hardly seen the outside of my office and it's already Friday. We have a busy weekend ahead too with the New Zealand vs. France rugby game and shopping for gifts for some lovely family members.

House hunting: Kitchen

Now we are house hunting again, hopefully this time for one to buy I have a little wish list of features I would like in my home.
The first thing on my little list is a nice and usable kitchen.

I love these rustic cupboards and the use of purple.

Everything within arms reach and the perfect amount of vintage.

Lots of shelving.

Cute storage solutions. I'd love two baskets like this; one for oils and frequently used seasonings and one for tea and coffee.

and if I'm really lucky I mite be able to purchase some new kitchenware too. I love these bowls from Urban Outfitters.

Cup of the World

I'm sorry this post is so delayed I have come down with a nasty flu, but like I said on Monday the Rugby World Cup officially kicked off here in New Zealand last week. During the day everyone at the office dressed up in their supporters gear and we took some silly photos for the paper.

We went to the waterfront to celebrate. The papers have dubbed it party central and I think all of Auckland and half of the surrounding area turned up.

The fireworks and opening ceremony was spectacular. We just happened to be right in the middle of were some of the fire works were going off and abseilers were hanging off the buildings. We also acted like total goofballs and cheered as loud as we could for the all blacks.

If your in NZ I hope you are enjoying all the games and if your from one of the 20 nations I really hope your enjoying it all too.

Outfit of the Week

Wow, I haven't done one of these posts in ages. It's a bit hard when in winter as it's dark when I leave in the morning and gets dark pretty quick right after I get home. I would take more pictures at home but as you can tell our lighting isn't so great. But hey Spring is here so the sun will be sticking around a little longer which should give me time to take more pictures.

I invested in a few more collared shirts last week, there great as there profesional enough that I can wear them to work but I can also pair them with jeans for a casual weekend outfit.

The weather decided to turn ugly again on Sunday and I felt like welcoming my new oven to the kitchen in style. Upon opening the cupboard I realized I really do need to go the the grocery store. I did have quarter of a pumpkin though so made the best pumpkin cakes I have ever had in my life.

These cakes are beautifully fragrant and incredibly moist and a little heavy. My best suggestion would be if possible lock your kitchen, four of these were munched up before they even made it out of the muffin trays.

Pumpkin Muffins (vegan)

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cups sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon *

1/2 teaspoon ground or freshly grated nutmeg *

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger *

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice *

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves *

1 cup pureed pumpkin (Fresh or from a can; don't use pumpkin pie mix)

1/2 cup soy milk

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 tablespoons apple sauce (or molasses if you like yours sweeter)

Preheat oven to 180°c. Lightly grease a twelve-muffin tin.

Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and spices.

In a separate bowl, whisk together pumpkin, soy milk, oil, and apple sauce. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix.

Fill the muffin cups two-thirds full. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until a toothpick or knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

* (I changed it up a bit and just used 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne and it worked perfectly)

Well the Rugby World Cup 2011 officially kicked off here on Friday night. We joined in the festivities and headed to the water front to watch the fireworks display, watch the game and opening ceremony on a big screen in the middle of the street with around 120,000 other supporters. It was INSANE. I'll show you some pictures from that later.
This is what I wore on Saturday while trudging around in a less than chipper over tired mood. We went to breakfast at our favorite local which did help improve my mood immensely though. Here's kinda of what I wore (I ditched shoes and make up for much of the day)

After a week of incredible spring weather it started to rain again on Sunday, I didn't mind too much though as I was quite happy snuggled up on the couch with my blanket and book.

Here's the truth: it's been a bit of a rough week. The kind of week that has you wanting to crawl under the covers and stay put for a while, that has you convincing yourself it's okay to have ice cream for every meal, or to avoid every phone call... you know the kind...

We've had a car crash, crashed computers, more doctors visits and crazy neighbor's but things are looking up with help from some of these things...

1. I'm loving this house catalogue. So many pretty things that make me wish we were moving now rather than in November.

2. The new to me blog that I'm finding very inspiring.

3. Wishing these pretty cases would fit my android. Especially this one and this one for the punk.

4. I finally have an oven again, so I know exactly how this girl feels.

5. Seeing all the beautiful collections from NZ Fashion week from my couch.

6. Getting to see this guy while stuck in traffic. Farewell buddy.

7. One of my favorite mags has launched a mens mag, and their super cute calendars and diaries are now available here.

Wow what a week. I've been super busy at work and then spending lots of time with my lovely friend Jimmi who I hadn't seen in 3 years. It's been great.

Kiwi Collection: Sunday SS12

New Zealand label Sunday’s collections always make me think of summer. Pale pink sun dresses and white maxi skirts look just about perfect.

Miriam White has been working her butt off at her campaign to reach the top 3 of the Westpac Young Designers Award and gain entry to show at the New Zealand Fashion Week. But. Turns out she didn’t need any more exposure because she was named in the TOP 3 this weekend! She is now in the running for the honors against two other supremely talented young kiwi designers and gets to show at the main event. I can't wait to see their shows.

These beautiful photo's really make me wish Summer would be here sooner. I can't wait to spend days outside enjoying the sunshine at the beach or the lake.

We have had the craziest weather this past week. It even snowed in Auckland on Monday and it hasn't done that since 1932. But lucky for us by the time the weekend came around it was lovely and sunny with just the slightest chill in the air. My best friend is constantly traveling, this makes it hard for us to spend much time together but it does let me in on some amazing locations around the world I might not of thought about going to before. One such place is Croatia. She's just left there and has a few tips to share for if you also decide to go.
So first off she's made it pretty clear that It truly is a “must see” leaving other more established European holiday spots for dead. It’s not too expensive (about 1-1 with New Zealand) and is hot when NZ is freezing.

1. Splash out a bit on accommodation, or make friends with someone staying at one of the more up market resorts or hotels. These hotels have gorgeous private beaches. Some of the perks include over water day beds and mini rooms to store your stuff and nap. Yes please!

It's been all about keeping warm here while I've been sick in bed with the flu, and then all of a sudden on Sunday while we were out watching the Junior All White's the sun decided to come out and cause me to absolutely boil in my sweater. It was fantastic! Thankfully I had my coat on top and was wearing mostly layers that I could take off.

I'm loving the androgynous nerd look of chino pants and collared shirts at the moment. I seem to have a soft spot for the slightly shorter legged pants, they seem to last a lot longer with my short legs.

When '90's minimalism gets it oh so right.

Madame Hawke is doing it perfectly with simple pieces, mostly in full colors with occasional prints, like the discreet pale flowers, and some lace pieces that increase the romantic factor.

I must agree with Rhiannon though and say the styling of the very gorgeous Ella V is spot on with those cute sandals.

C. Chore that you hate: I'm quite OCD and will just clean and clean and clean. But I hate when my housemates don't do their chores. Does that count?

D. Dogs: I have a rottweiler. Her name is Heta, but I had to give her to my dad because it's unfair to make dog's live in inner city apartments. Now they both live in Australia, she's still my baby though.

I've finally succumbed to the seasonal flu. I'm treating it with lots of spinach, soup, tea with honey and rest.
Which is why this whole weekend was spent in my PJ's watching movies with the punk. Have you seen True Grit yet? I must say I really liked it but Jeff Bridges needs to work on his diction, old time SOuthern accent or not.
I must admit I do love PJ's, why is it that your not meant to wear them in public?
